US concerned over Police/shitee clashes

The United States Government on Friday has expressed concern  over last Monday's killings of shiite members in Kano that came about because of conflicts between individuals in a Shia parade and the Nigeria Police in Kano.

This is contained in statement by Mr John Kirby, Spokesman of the US embassy in Abuja, he said that in spite of the fact that the episode was under investigation, his government was grieved by the reaction of the police.

"The United States is profoundly worried by the death of many Nigerians amid conflicts between people partaking in a Shia parade and the Nigerian Police Force in Kano State.

"While the matter is still under scrutiny, we are beset by the clear lopsided reaction by the police.

"This is the most recent in a progression of fierce episodes between security strengths and individuals from the Shia Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), some of which have brought about passings, decimation of property, and the discretionary confinement of IMN individuals.

"The United States calls for quiet and restriction on all sides, a decrease of strains, and more prominent correspondence between Shia subjects and government powers,'' he said.

As indicated by him, individuals from the Shia people group, as different religious groups, have the privilege to collect, calmly express their religious convictions, and check their festivals.

"we continue to urge the government to ensure accountability for the deaths of more than 300 IMN members during December 15,2015 clashes between the IMN and security forces in Zaria, Kaduna State.

“We also call on the Nigerian government to conduct a transparent investigation of the latest incidents and bring to account anyone responsible for violating the law,’’ he added. (NAN)
